The Scenic Route™

Ah yes, the famed Caminho Português. I started from Lisbon, because apparently I disliked comfort and good sense. Sensible people begin in Tomar or Porto, skipping four or fourteen days respectively of soul-flattening roads, indifferent farm fields, and a nonstop parade of lorries and tractors with a personal vendetta against pedestrians.

But no, I needed to do the whole thing. Being something of a completionist thru-hiker, I couldn’t bring myself to start halfway. I did, after all, walk the Meseta on the Francés. Fewer lorries there. Fewer anything, really. Just sun, dust, and sunflowers that were absolutely useless in conversation.

Shot on a Nikon D850 with the 28–70mm f/2.8 AF-S D, a 2.5kg commitment including spare batteries and charger. Most people’s entire packs barely weigh twice that on a 780km Camino. I carried mine for the moments that deserved more than a phone.
